Obituary: Elaine Louise Sutherland

Elaine Sutherland was born in Stratton, Colo., on Oct. 9, 1929. She died on Dec. 7.

With her husband, Bruce, she lived and worked in the Roaring Fork Valley for many years, first in Aspen and later in Basalt. Elaine volunteered in different capacities in the community, especially in the field of recovery from alcoholism.

Her compassion and love were her special gift, and she touched the hearts of many; she will be missed.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Martin and Laurene Gade; a son, Stephen C. Beckner; and her husband and soulmate, Bruce R. Sutherland. She is survived by a son, Ronald D. Beckner (Kathy); a daughter, Karen E. Rogers (Mick); and a brother, Donald M. Gade (Elsa).

She left three stepchildren, Marty, Cindy and Mark Sutherland; five grandchildren; five stepgrandchildren and numerous great-grandchildren.

A funeral will be held in Denver at Olinger Chapel Hill Mortuary and Cemetery in Littleton. A celebration of Elaine’s life here in the valley is planned by her friends for a later date. An announcement will be placed in the paper.
