John Ross Stine

April 15, 1943 — November 2, 2016

JOHN ROSS STINE, age 73, of Snowmass Village, Colorado passed away on November 2, 2016. He was born April 15, 1943 in Bryan, Ohio to William and Helen (Snyder) Stine. John attended Northwestern University in Chicago, Illinois and graduated with a B.S. degree from Baldwin Wallace University in Berea, Ohio.

Most of his career involved positions in accounting and computer systems. John worked for IBM in Cleveland, Ohio; served as Controller for Darling International in Dallas, Texas and the Snowmass Resort Association; and co-owned a retail computer business in Denver, Colorado.

Other pursuits showed his playful side including building his own home; competing in triathlons; and stints as a ski instructor in Michigan, a wrangler at the T-Lazy Seven Ranch, and manager of Stefan Kaelin's ski shop in Snowmass Village. Above all, he treasured his roles as father, husband, brother, son, and friend.

John fell in love with this area on a ski trip to Aspen during his high school years and got here as fast as he could, in 1973. Being in nature, usually with his Nikon camera and one of his adoring golden retrievers by his side, was where he felt most at home and he was happiest on skis, a windsurfer, a horse, a bike, a trail, or a golf course. Always intrigued by what might lie around the next corner, he often took us on longer hikes, ski runs, or bike rides than we had planned.

We will remember his gentle kindness, generosity of spirit, and loyalty to friends as well as his keen sense of adventure, endearing smile, and love of these mountains he called home.

He is survived by his wife, Diane Anderson-Stine; daughter, Kirsten E. Stine of Hurst, Texas; brothers William H. Stine (Heather) of Reston, Virginia and David B. Stine (Penne) of Beaverton, Oregon; nephews Christopher Stine of Washington, D.C. and Tevis Stine (Michelle) of Berkeley Lake, Georgia; grand nephew Justin Stine; and cousin Sandy Blumfeldt (David) of Maumee, Ohio. John is preceded in death by his parents.

Plans for a gathering are pending.
