Dorothy A. Cooper nee Bertheuson

August 5, 1927 - May 14, 2015

Dorothy A. Cooper nee Bertheuson, 87, formerly of Evanston, IL, a two-time breast cancer survivor, passed away peacefully on May 14, 2015. Loving wife of the late Theodore S. “Ted” Cooper; beloved mother of Ted (Julia), John (Lisa), and Liz (Jim) Collier; cherished grandmother of Kelly, Natalie, Sarah, and Ryan Cooper and Christina and Stephen Collier; dear sister of the late Phil (Fran) and the late John Bertheuson; beloved sister-in-law of Stirling “Buzz” (Valerie) Cooper and Liz Cooper; and many cherished nieces, nephews, friends, and her devoted caregiver Virgilia R. “Virgie” Ebarle.

Dorothy was a 1949 graduate of Concordia College in Moorhead, MN where she performed in the Concordia Choir, the first choir to go to Norway after World War II. She was a music teacher at elementary and middle schools in Mayville, ND, Denver, CO (where she met her beloved husband, Ted), Evanston and Highland Park, IL. She loved teaching and putting together numerous music programs for the schools. Dorothy had a beautiful voice; she sang at all her children’s weddings, was a 40-year member of the Trinity Lutheran Church Choir, and now is singing in heaven with choirs of angels. She was a long-time volunteer at the Aspen Music Tent and spent many wonderful summers with family there. Dorothy loved reading, traveling, cooking and spending time with her family. She was a strong role model, always encouraging and wise in so many ways. She will be greatly missed.

A memorial service will be held Monday, June 1, 2015 at 11 am at Trinity Lutheran Church, 3637 Golf Rd., Evanston, IL. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be sent to Countryside Association for People with Disabilities, 21154 W. Shirley Road, Palatine, IL 60074. Funeral information 847-998-1020.
