Adrian Claire ‘Sammy’ Shafer
December 17, 2015
Adrian Claire "Sammy" Shafer passed away at peace and with dignity in the loving care of hospice the day before Thanksgiving, Nov. 25, 2015. Mrs. Shafer had been courageously holding her own in recent years battling an acute neurodegenerative disease, but a fatally failed hospitalization hastened her sudden demise. At the time of her passing, she was residing in the historic Chesapeake Bay town of Easton, Md., with her husband.
Beloved and admired for her style, grace and exquisite taste, Sammy was a popular figure on the Aspen social scene for many years. She attained celebrity during her late teens and early 20's as a beauty queen and fashion model, arriving in Aspen in the mid- 1970s as the reigning Miss Lake Tahoe. She spent her first winters in Aspen as an on-mountain ambassador for the Ski Corp. and as a catalog model for ski apparel designers Klaus Obermeyer and Willie Bogner. Once betrothed to the famed ski racer Dick Dorworth, Sammy Dorworth later carved out a long-running career as sole proprietor of Aspen Interior Design. In 1996, she married Bob Shafer of Washington, DC, a long time Aspen bon vivant and part time resident. The couple moved to Montecito, CA., in 1999 to begin their partnership in the custom homebuilding business.
Sammy was an avid skier, accomplished horsewoman and wily tennis doubles competitor. Among her favorite outdoor recreational pursuits was being a charter member of Barbi Benton's "Wonder Woman" hiking club. Her end-of-life directive called for being "stylishly" cremated wearing her most expensive Lululemon tights and her cherished, camouflage "Wonder Woman" sweatshirt
Mrs. Shafer's trademark eccentricity was zealously safeguarding the prerogative of keeping her numerical age a "mystery." Looking and living 20 years younger than her years was integral to her elan and feminine mystique.
A true sister of the Age of Aquarius, Sammy became romantically beguiled in the abstract with the metaphysics of reincarnation. In accordance with her final wishes, she now swims in eternity with a school of dolphins just offshore the Four Seasons Santa Barbara Biltmore — for her, the most enchanting venue on earth. Her ashes will be spread at a later date at a sacred site somewhere atop Aspen Mt., the backdrop
for the happiest memories of her life.
