Aspen Times Staff Report

Veronica Cooper Converse, the former Mrs. Gary Cooper, passed away in her sleep at her New York home on Thursday, Feb. 17, of heart failure. She was 87.

Known as “Rocky,” she was recognized as a devoted wife, hostess, and sportswoman. During the 1930s she was California State Woman’s Skeet Champion, as well as an active golfer, skier, swimmer, scuba diver, tennis player and surfer.

In the late 1940s and early 1950s, the Cooper family had a home in Aspen on Red Mountain. They spent winter holidays skiing here and enjoyed horseback riding in Hunter Creek during summers.

After the death of her husband, actor Gary Cooper in 1961, Mrs. Cooper moved to New York where she wed Dr. John Converse, who passed away in 1981. She was active as a fund-raiser for his Institute of Reconstructive Plastic Surgery at NYU Medical Center.

Funeral services were held at the Church of Sacred Hearts of Jesus and Mary, in Southampton, N.Y. A private memorial service has been arranged at 1 E. 66 Street in New York City on March 14. For more information call (212) 838-2455.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests contributions be sent either to Mother Dolores Hart, care of The Abbey of Regina Laudis, Bethlehem, CT 06751, or to the National Foundation for Facial Reconstruction, 317 E. 34th St., NY 10016, which supports the Institute’s work.
