Obit: Steven Joseph Paynter

Aspen Times staff report

Longtime Aspen resident Steven Joseph Paynter died recently while hiking in the Black Canyon of the Gunnison. He was 30 years old.

A memorial service for Paynter will be held at 3 p.m. Saturday at the home of Steven Paynter and Nancy White, in Shield O Mesa in Old Snowmass. Directions to the house will be marked from Snowmass Creek Road past the Aspen Camp School for the Deaf, or call 923-5923.

Paynter had lived in the Roaring Fork Valley for 10 years. He was an independent contractor who worked on homes in Aspen and Snowmass. According to White, Paynter had no experience when he began building their home in Shield O Mesa, yet learned on the job “and built a beautiful home.”

Paynter died during a hiking trip along the north rim of Black Canyon. He apparently lost his footing on some loose rock and fell, White said.

He is survived by his beloved companion, Nancy White; parents Cathy and Gordy Paynter; brother Jeff, and sister Jill, all of Wisconsin.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Marcus Morton Productions, An Aspen Grassroots Experience; P.O. Box 10885; Aspen CO 81611.
