Obama misportrays President Hayes

Dear Editor:

OK, so Obama didn’t do his research; it’s too bad he picked on another bearded old white guy and said something completely untrue and disrespectful on the highest order about our 19th president of the United States, Rutherford Birchard Hayes. Oh, and did I mention? Yeah, Hayes was a Republican; just can’t get a break, even after being dead 119 years. I mean, come on: Couldn’t he just blame it on George Bush instead of knockin’ some dead president, the remains of whom wouldn’t whiten his coffee?

A few more things about RBH: (Yeah, I know, the coffee comment was uncalled-for, but I loved the macabre analogy and deep historical symbolism.)

Hayes retired in 1881. He spent the rest of his life devoted to causes of importance to him, such as providing scholarships to African-Americans and encouraging temperance.

He is quoted as saying, “It is the desire of the good people of the whole country that sectionalism as a factor in our politics should disappear.”

Also, he loved the telephone and was the first president to have one in the White House.

Thought you should know.
