Not to be missed

Dear Editor:

Aspenites of a certain age can remember listening to folk songs at the Abbey Cellar and to cabaret classics at Sunnie’s Rendezvous. This Friday at 7:30 p.m., Jeannie Walla will be singing a program of romantic songs at Christ Episcopal Church at Fifth and North Streets.

Most of the songs in her program have lyrics that are classics published in the Gottlieb/Kimball collection or reading lyrics published by Pantheon in 2000. Well-made lyrics lend themselves to infinite varieties of interpretations by the arranger, the instrumentalists and the singer.

It’s wonderful that Ms. Walla will be performing at a venue where she will not have to compete with waitstaff flitting about and bar glasses being clinked. A small church is exactly the right place to listen to and appreciate the turns of phrase and articulation that reveal the intimacy, tenderness and nostalgia of America’s contribution to the world of song.

We’ve heard Jeannie sing public anthems and memorial hymns. This Friday, treat yourself by attending her concert.
