Not ready for more construction

Editor’s Note: This letter was originally addressed to Eagle County commissioners.

Dear Editor:

I have to say no to building on the Tree Farm property at this time. There is currently a glut of properties available both for rent and sale extending all the way to Parachute, and there are few opportunities for employment. I agree with Louis Wilsher regarding density in the midvalley but I strongly disagree as to the timing of this project. More properties on the market will not help our economy at this time. Property owners in the valley are struggling.

Have you seen the number of foreclosures? I have had a vacancy in my Carbondale rental property since October despite reducing rents to below 2001 levels and yet my property taxes increased 65 percent.

I am struggling like everyone as an under-employed construction bookkeeper, and I know job creation and economic recovery will be slow without new construction, but don’t you think our economy was artificially being driven by contractors, realtors, investors and bankers? We all knew we couldn’t keep going at that rate. New construction requires new residents and new jobs outside of the construction industry. All we have is tourism, ranching and construction. Perhaps it’s time we thought about sustainable growth.

Let’s find alternative ways to recover in the job market before embarking on more new construction.
