Not my values

Dear Editor:According to studies by the American Cancer Society, Harvard University, the World Health Organization and other organizations, air pollution kills about 70,000 Americans every year. Instead of trying to prevent these deaths, President Bush has spent the last three years trying to weaken or eliminate laws that control air pollution, in order to save big industries the cost of cleaning up their own poisons. Whenever he fails to have the laws repealed, he simply orders the Environmental Protection Agency not to enforce them. The result has been thousands of additional American deaths every year.

Similar studies show that mercury pollution causes mental retardation in children when their mothers have high levels of mercury in their system while pregnant. Currently, one in 12 American women of child-bearing age have dangerous levels of mercury in their systems. This translates to 322,000 newborns currently at risk of neurological impairment from mercury poisoning. Yet, President Bush is currently trying to relax environmental laws enough to allow power plants to dump five times as much mercury into the air. These are just two examples. President Bush has repeatedly shown a willingness to sacrifice the health, safety and lives of American men, women and children in order to help polluters add a few more dollars to their profit margin. Now he says that I should vote for him because, “Your values are my values.” These are not my values. David LeithauserDeLand, Fla.
