Norton leaving thetop job at the Butte

Aspen Times writer

John Norton, the former Aspen Skiing Co. executive who became president and CEO of Crested Butte Mountain Resort, has announced his resignation from the post.Norton, chief operating officer for the Skico before accepting the job at Crested Butte two years ago, is returning to consulting work but will continue to play a role in a couple of projects at CBMR – the expansion of the ski area onto Snodgrass and the development of a new town center in Mount Crested Butte, according to a press release issued Thursday by the resort.”I wrestled with my decision to leave the company for the past six months and never felt good about it because planning a brilliant town center and achieving lift-served, alpine skiing on Snodgrass are so important to our success as a community,” Norton said in a prepared statement. The change in ownership of CBMR – Tim and Diane Mueller purchased the resort last winter – was not a factor in the decision, Norton told the Crested Butte News.Norton had a consulting business before first joining Crested Butte in 1985. He left in 1991 to work for the Skico and returned to CBMR in 2002.He said he’ll be doing general management consulting for a variety of companies and will continue to reside in Crested Butte.
