MAYBELL, Colo. – A lightning-caused wildfire in northwest Colorado has spread to about 3,000 acres in less than 24 hours.

Firefighters say the blaze started at about 4 p.m. Monday on federal land 20 miles west of the small town of Maybell. Maybell is 170 miles west of Denver and 100 miles north of Grand Junction.

Officials say no structures are threatened. No injuries have been reported.

The fire started in ponderosa pine but then moved into pinon and juniper, quickly spreading across the treetops.

About 100 firefighters are on scene, including ground crews, smoke jumpers, engine crews and others. A helicopter is also fighting the fire.
