No skiing at Ajax this Memorial Day

There won’t be lift-served skiing on Aspen Mountain this Memorial Day weekend, but not for a lack of snow.

“Everybody’s asking, obviously,” said Rose Abello, Aspen Skiing Co. spokeswoman.

The constant supply of fresh stuff throughout April and early May had people curious as to whether the Skico would open the slopes again for Memorial Day, but it simply won’t work, according to Abello.

Construction of the new Sundeck restaurant at the top of Ajax is three days behind schedule because of the spring snow, she said. It’s feared that skiing could further interfere with the schedule.

The goal remains to try to get the public portion of the new mountaintop restaurant open by Christmas – an aggressive timetable for a project at 11,000 feet.

In addition, Aspen Mountain roads have already been cleared to assist with runoff. Skiing over the roads would turn a leisurely experience into the Extreme Games, to say nothing of what it would do to skis.

The Skico has opened on Memorial Day and other weekends in past Mays whenever conditions allowed on Aspen Mountain, including last year. And the snow is inviting again this year.

Abello said there is a 96-inch base at the top of Aspen Mountain – a greater amount than the mountain boasted for much of the regular ski season.

“Historically, we always close on the biggest base,” Abello noted.

Snowmass wasn’t considered for alternative spring skiing. It would require customers to ride three chairlifts to the top rather than one gondola, like at Aspen Mountain.
