No preseason ski day for AVSC
November 20, 2006
The Aspen Valley Ski and Snowboard Club’s season-opening fundraiser, scheduled for Wednesday on Aspen Mountain, has been canceled because of the mountain’s early opening. The Aspen Skiing Co. allows the club to sell tickets to the public to get on the mountain a day before the official opening, with proceeds helping fund the club’s winter programs.Last year, when the mountain opened as scheduled on Thanksgiving, the nonprofit organization brought in $16,000 from lift ticket sales. The fundraiser has been canceled in three of the past six years because of late or early mountain openings. Alan Cole, AVSC’s marketing and development manager, said the club must raise the money it had planned to make Wednesday through other fundraising efforts.”We’re just grateful to have the opportunity to do this in the first place,” said Cole. “[The Aspen Skiing Co.] is very generous to us. There aren’t a lot of ski clubs in the country who have the same kind of relationship.”The club does no presales for the early-opening fundraiser, which means no refunds must be issued.AVSC is celebrating its 70th anniversary this season. It is hosting a gala benefit at the St. Regis Aspen on Dec. 9. Tickets for the 500-seat event cost $100. An Audi A4 will be raffled at the gala; ticket sales will benefit the club. The Aspen Times, Aspen, Colo.
