No North 40 criticism intended

Dear Editor:In Janet Urquhart’s Dec. 27 article, “City: No million-dollar homes at Burlingame,” I made comments referring to the million-dollar resales at North 40 as “ridiculous.” Furthermore, I stated I did not want the first turnaround at Burlingame Ranch to be in excess of $1 million. With strong feelings about this, my comments were, “That is so obscene.” Strong feelings beget strong comments.North 40 was privately developed in Pitkin County. Although there may have been some government subsidy, it does not compare to the 100 percent city-subsidized Burlingame Ranch. Although there are resale caps at North 40, the RO property owners are allowed to recoup the cost of their land and residence. Therefore, those homeowners who either sell or list their residences for prices in excess of $1 million are well within their rights. However, there is agreement on City Council and on the Aspen-Pitkin County Housing Board that Burlingame Ranch, as a 100 percent city-subsidized development, would fail in its goal to provide affordable housing if the first resales were close to or in excess of $1 million. To those who may have been offended by my comments, please know they were to express my commitment to what the city must do at Burlingame Ranch. It was not my intention to criticize North 40 homeowners.Helen Kalin KlanderudAspen Mayor
