No need for a big-box

Dear Editor:I am deeply disappointed by the rampant misinformation surrounding the candidates in Carbondale’s upcoming elections. In Brad Hendrick’s recent letter to the [Glenwood Springs] Post [Independent], he attempts to characterize several of the more progressive trustees as self-righteous, power-wielding ideologues who engage in all manners of unsavory practices. Sadly, he urges voters to “restore balance” to the council by voting for Patch-Bernot, Foulkrod and Maggert.Misinformation is unfortunately a very powerful tool, and is used when arguments of substance can’t be made. A serious discussion of what a big-box would do to Carbondale (just look at what it’s doing to Glenwood’s small businesses) would reveal that it would change our town forever. In addition to the loss of local businesses, it would usher in far more traffic, far more light pollution and questionable long-term economic benefits. We don’t need a big-box in Carbondale. Let’s play to our strengths. Let’s pursue a plan for economic development that is sustainable for the long haul, and that enriches us all. Vote for the candidate who understands the soul of Carbondale, and is willing to fight to preserve it.Vote for Chaplin, and only Chaplin. Marc J. Bruell, Ph.D.Carbondale
