No means yes

Dear Editor:In my view, the “no” votes mean “yes.””No” to excessive development, “yes” to preservation of our quality of life. “Yes” to growth control, “yes” to height limits, “yes” to open space. No, it is not the charge of council to ensure that developers reap a profit on overinflated investments. No, mindless expansion is not “progress.”Aspen has transformed from a resort town to a real estate economy. Those of us who still treasure what we came here to enjoy have an opportunity in this municipal election to re-configure the council and slow the rampant growth we are currently experiencing.Terry Paulson has learned the intricacies of local government over many years of selfless public service. He has no agenda besides maintaining the quality and environment of Aspen. He has been consistent in his position throughout these years. He has been stymied by Klanderud and Torre, who have jumped over to the pro-growth bandwagon of Semrau and Richards. Paulson has been steadfast throughout, but hopelessly outnumbered. As mayor, Paulson will bring dignity to the job. He will represent Aspen to visitors and to locals with good manners and grace. He will be thoughtful, he will not dominate meetings, he will not parade an ego. In policy, he will seek a sustainable, moderate path. Don’t let’s lose the services of this intelligent, caring, and dedicated public servant.Add the election of two new like-minded, slow-growth council members. With a majority of three, a turnaround can be achieved before it is too late to save what is left of our fragile, irreplaceable environment.Katharine ThalbergAspen
