No facts behind opinion

Dear Editor:

I read Ruthie Brown’s letter published March 5 (“Pitkin stands up for Thompson Divide,” The Aspen Times). The following is an excerpt from that letter:

“Of particular concern is the watershed of Thompson Divide. I applaud Pitkin County’s efforts to highlight the threat of what drilling would have on the water quality, mostly because of unregulated fracking practices that have proven to have detrimental effects on water. There are no rules or regulations in place to protect the water from dangerous drilling practices. The science is not there. Allowing the leases to expire is the only sensible action to allow for the Environmental Protection Agency to catch up and recover from the deregulation of the Bush/Cheney era and allow science to determine the appropriateness of further drilling.”

I would question her opinion that “fracking practices are unregulated” and would ask for her documentation that fracking has proven detrimental effects on water. To which water is she referring? In addition, she referred to “dangerous drilling practices” and declared that the science is not there. Garfield County has 10,000 natural-gas wells; I’m guessing that there is a body of scientific proof regarding damage to “water” and maybe a list of dangers that have resulted from drilling?

Robin Raphel, an official in the U.S. Department of State opined in 2005: “You cannot very effectively counter ideology with logic, experience or scientific facts.”

Imagine a society where we would have to prove our opinions.
