No butts about it

Dear Editor:OK, I will concede your rights to please smoke outside, upwind about a block away from me. And this is coming from an ex-smoker of 14 years and I’m proud of it.But please rationalize, what right do you possibly think you have to discard your butts on the ground to wash into our drains, our rivers, lakes and oceans. And then to become one of our single largest world pollution problems! Cigarette butts can take up to 3,000 years to decompose. What or whose right is that? Can’t we all agree it’s just plain wrong, regardless of the act?For instance, I took a walk on this bluebird morning to have a little breakfast in town and in three short blocks, I began to lose count of all the cigarette butts I counted. Disgusted and embarrassed. It only got worse as I entered town with the greatest collections of butts, right outside local restaurants and businesses! Can’t we hang a “No butts about it” sign on every parking machine and supply some public ashtrays? Make business be responsible for their patrons and employees to keep this gorgeous town free of such toxic waste and embarrassing filth. This is not a political editorial but rather just a plain common sense and dignified respect for this wonderful place we have the privilege to live in. Let’s take more pride and remind our guests that this is simply darn right unacceptable. We deserve better, as do future generations. I’m afraid that this is just not A right! Enough said.Denis GrosvenorAspen
