No blank checks

Dear Editor:

While it may seem contradictory, a ‘NO’ vote on the RETT extension is a vote FOR responsible affordable housing. If you believe that workforce housing is fundamental for Aspen, vote NO to let the city hear your message that the scarce resources need to be spent with the goal of housing more of our workforce in an efficient and practical fashion. The city should stop wasting millions as we did with Burlingame and get the housing development program under control. One hundred and fifty more families could have been housed in quality units if only basic management and development principles had been in place.

The RETT does not expire until 2024. The city wants the voter assurance now that the stream of revenue will continue through 2040, although they have no responsible plan for use of the money. They want a blank check. I want to enthusiastically support the RETT tax extension on a future ballot after the city demonstrates a responsible plan, which incorporates efficiency and a better focus on housing priorities.

Vote NO on 2F to let the city know that you want a more efficient housing program. Vote for 300 on the density question (2G) to ask that the city optimize our most underutilized housing asset ” Burlingame land.

But whatever you do ” vote!
