A public meeting to discuss how to better integrate recent immigrants to the Roaring Fork Valley failed to attract a single participant Sunday.

The Coalition for the Community Integration Initiative, an umbrella organization of about 80 local nonprofits, is currently holding public meetings in preparation for a grant proposal that could potentially win $300,000 for valleywide immigration integration programs.

While meetings downvalley have been better attended, coalition representatives blamed poor weather and immigrant reticence for the upvalley no-show. They added that public meetings are just one aspect of a multifaceted approach to community input.

“We are meeting with groups such as city councils, school boards, churches, ESL teachers. These public meetings are just to cover our bases, to make sure we don’t miss anyone,” initiative mediator Maro Zagoras said.

The initiative is applying for a grant from the Colorado Trust, a nonprofit organization that works to help immigrants adapt to life in the United States and participate more fully in the communities where they live.

A large, valleywide meeting will take place April 8 in Glenwood Springs to review the results of the coalition’s research.

Grand River Hospital District in western Garfield County has a new interim chief executive officer.

Michael Raymond, who was the district’s chief financial officer for more than two years, will take over for departing CEO Pat Howery. Howery served his last day last week after more than five years in the organization’s top administrative position.

Raymond was one of three finalists to interview for the spot.

“Out of the three candidates we interviewed, Mike interviewed the best,” said Bruce Mills, president of the district’s board of directors.

Mills said the board will take the next 60 to 75 days to evaluate Raymond’s leadership style while reconsidering the more than 130 applicants who sent resumes.

Raymond will be both acting CEO and CFO, also a board-appointed position, until the board makes a decision.

“I think because I’ve never held the title of CEO before, they want to try me out first,” he said.
