Local author wins Colorado Book AwardSnowmass Village author Janis Lindsey Huggins took home the 2005 Colorado Book Award for nonfiction last week for “Snowmass Village: Wild at Heart,” a 487-page guide detailing the plants, animals, birds and natural history of Snowmass Village and the surrounding region. “I was inspired to write such an in-depth field guide by the magnificent natural beauty of the Snowmass Village area, and I wanted others to experience this diverse and amazing ecosystem we live in,” Huggins said during her acceptance speech. “We tend to protect and preserve what we understand and love, so my goal was to educate readers about the incredible species we share the land with and encourage them to get out and explore.” “Wild at Heart” is a natural history guide to Snowmass, Aspen and the Maroon Bells-Snowmass Wilderness published by the town of Snowmass Village. Several local naturalists, environmentalists, geologists and editors contributed to the book.The town will host a celebration and book signing for “Wild at Heart” later this year. I-70 ramp work set in GlenwoodThe Colorado Department of Transportation has rescheduled the resurfacing of several Interstate 70 ramps in the Glenwood Springs area for Monday and Tuesday, Oct. 23-24.The ramp closures had been scheduled for late last week, but the work had to be delayed for inclement weather. The project will take place during nonpeak traffic periods; however, motorists should plan at least 10 extra minutes to use detour routes.On Monday, the I-70 eastbound exit ramp (No. 116) in Glenwood Springs will be closed from noon to 4 p.m. Motorists will be able to access Glenwood Springs from I-70 at Exit 114 (West Glenwood Springs).On Tuesday, the westbound entrance ramp at Exit 116 in Glenwood Springs will be closed from 6 to 10 a.m. Motorists will be able to access westbound I-70 at West Glenwood Springs via Highway 6. Also Tuesday, the I-70 westbound entrance and exit ramps at Exit 114 (West Glenwood Springs) will be closed from 10 a.m. until 1:30 p.m. Motorists can access West Glenwood Springs and westbound I-70 via Highway 6 and Exit 116. The I-70 eastbound entrance and exit ramps at Exit 114 will be closed from 1:30 to 6 p.m. Motorists can access eastbound I-70 and West Glenwood Springs via Exit 116 and Highway 6.Flaggers will be on site to direct motorists; signs also will aid motorists. Aspen’s Best: And the winners are …Lauren Mock and Sara Faurer have won $100 gift certificates to either Kenichi or Jimmy’s for participating in the 2006 Aspen’s Best voting.Ballots were placed in a drawing for the prize.The yearly edition of Aspen’s Best, which The Aspen Times sponsors, spurs Aspenites into action, voting for their favorite restaurant, teacher and barfly, among other categories. The results are tabulated for an annual Aspen Times Weekly feature, published Sept. 3.
