Pitco closes down for the FourthPitkin County will be closed for an extra day during the Fourth of July holiday. County offices and services, including the landfill, will be closed Monday and Tuesday. Five Pitkin County organizations receive grantsThe Colorado Council on the Arts has awarded almost $1 million in its 2007 Grants to Artists and Organizations, with $49,960 going to Pitkin County-based organizations.The council on the arts supports Colorado artists, cultural organizations and community groups with four goals: “Increasing cultural participation in communities, learning in the arts for children and youth, preserving and promoting our cultural heritage and professional development for artists and organizations.”Groups in Pitkin County receiving grants are: Music Associates of Aspen Inc. ($16,000), Aspen Ballet Company and School ($20,000), Aspen Writers’ Foundation ($8,500), Aspen Art Museum ($6,960) and Independent Films Inc. ($8,500). The groups were required to show merit and artistic excellence, community involvement and benefit, and implementation capacity in the application. They also had to prove they could match the grant dollar for dollar. The Council on the Arts awards the grants on a competitive basis, whittling 145 applications totaling $1.7 million down to 94 projects in 31 counties for a total of $999,350. The Council is slated to receive $1.5 million in state funding this year, up from $700,000 last year.
