News in Brief

Summer vacation may start early for some Aspen students. With a tight schedule looming to build a new middle school, as well as repair the roof and add a new wing at the elementary school, school district administrators have come up with two proposals to end classes before the scheduled June 2 close of the school year. Both proposals will go to the Aspen School Board at its 7 a.m. Monday meeting, Superintendent Diana Sirko said. One scenario calls for ending school for kindergarten through fourth grade on May 26 – a week early. The other would end kindergarten classes on May 26, while first- through eighth-graders would finish on May 31.”At the elementary, we’ve got to have the new wing put on top of the old wing and have it habitable by Aug. 28,” Sirko said. “It’s just to facilitate the construction schedule.”

Patti Clapper on Tuesday announced she will run for her third term as a Pitkin County commissioner. During her time on the board she has served on the Northwest Colorado Council of Governments for six years and served as the chairwoman for the past four.”I think that’s a huge benefit for Pitkin County,” she said. “When I have an issue for the county, I have a face to talk to in Washington and Denver.”She said she is excited to run for her third four-year term. “I have a belief in the community,” she said, “I like working for Pitkin County.”
