Basalt High swings into actionStudents planning to attend Basalt High School when school resumes on Aug. 30 should mark Aug. 23, 24 and 25 on their calendars.Registration, payment of fees, locker assignment and the taking of school pictures are on Aug. 23 for freshmen and sophomores (9 to 11 a.m. for freshmen, 1 to 3 p.m. for sophomores) and Aug. 24 for juniors (9 to 11 a.m.) and seniors (1 to 3 p.m.)On Aug. 25, Principal Jim Waddick, with help from the senior class, will hold the traditional welcoming barbecue at the school from noon to 2 p.m. Waddick said there will be “a few ice-breaker activities” and the awarding of some door prizes as a way to introduce new students and freshmen to the school population. The barbecue will be in the student center/cafeteria.

Public works departments without electricity on FridayMany of the Pitkin County public works departments will be without phones and electricity on Friday from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m.According to the county, the departments affected include Road & Bridge, Assets, Project Management, Transportation, Land Management, Translator, Fleet and Open Space & Trails Rangers and Management. The offices at 76 Service Center Road will remain open for customers.If the public needs to contact someone while the power and phones are out, the county asks that they call the administrative cell phone at 618-8529.
