Aspen Community picnic, portrait setAspen’s annual community picnic will take place Wednesday, Aug. 31 at Paepcke Park. The City Council will serve burgers and hot dogs, starting at 5 p.m., and a community portrait photograph will be taken at about 6:30 p.m.In keeping with Aspen’s new Canary Initiative, the city has declared this year’s picnic a vehicle-free event. Attendees are encouraged to walk, bike, bus or carpool, and enter to win prizes, including iPods.Music will be provided by Heart of the Rockies. Food, prepared by Aspen Caterers, will be served to the first 750 guests.For the portrait, 2005 newborns and their parents will occupy the front row, seated on the grass. Next will be Aspen’s senior citizens in chairs. Then, all residents will be organized by the decade they arrived in Aspen. Photos can be ordered on-site at the picnic for pickup at a later date at Community Banks of Colorado Aspen and Basalt, a sponsor of the event. Orders placed up to 30 days after the date of the picnic can be ordered at Community Banks. Orders placed later than 31 days after the picnic can be ordered through the Aspen Historical Society, 925-3721.
