New snow piles up at Snowmass

ASPEN ” Sunny skies are back in Aspen’s forecast on Friday, but Snowmass picked up 10 inches of new snow on Wednesday night and Thursday morning.

The Aspen Skiing Co. was reporting 10 inches of fresh stuff at Snowmass by about 12:30 p.m. Thursday, and 7 inches at Aspen Highlands. Buttermilk had 5 inches of new snow and Aspen Mountain picked up 4 inches by the midday report.

Warm temperatures, though, made for sticky snow in town. Rain fell overnight in the lower Roaring Fork Valley but colder temperatures produced wet snow in Aspen and Snowmass.

There’s a chance for more snow overnight on Thursday, with another inch of accumulation, according to the National Weather Service, before sunshine moves in on Friday, with highs of 25 to 35.

Mostly cloudy skies are forecast Saturday and Sunday, with a 20 percent chance of snow both days. Highs in the 20s are expected on Saturday; highs of 25 to 35 are predicted Sunday, according to the weather service.
