New service arises from building boom

Everyone hopes Base Village turns out to be the perfect development. Now the construction workers building the massive project will be able to see – in the form of buxom food deliverers – what perfect development looks like.A new business opened May 9 with the goal of satisfying hungry contractors who will descend on Snowmass Village in force next month as construction on the project’s first phase gets under way.The women Toasty Chicks Delivery envisions employing will be “fun and energetic,” said Tahnee Perry, 26, a partner in the business who is also a server. The Toasty Chick (there’s only Perry right now and the business is looking for three or four more servers) will take the lunch order of a construction crew, for instance. The Chick then relays the order to the restaurant of choice in the village, picks it up and delivers the food to the site.

The motto: “From our box to yours.” The uniform: a tight T-shirt with the business motto.(Insert your own catcall here.)The business was the brainchild of Snowmass Village’s Rodney Millspaugh. The owner said he blurted the idea out during a beer-soaked aprés ski outing at the Mountain Dragon “and a couple of people at the table said, ‘Hey, I’ll invest in your company.'”The business is centered on Base Village, Millspaugh said, as the town girds for at least a decade of construction. The development is scheduled to be completed in 2011, but developers Intrawest and the Aspen Skiing Co. have 20 years if needed to build it.Base Village will add 1 million square feet of new development, including 610 residential units, 600 hotel rooms, an underground parking garage, 11 restaurants and bars, and 65,000 square feet of retail space.Construction workers – Millspaugh expects 600 of them – building the exterior of structures will work from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m., meaning they’ll need plenty of energy, and mental distractions, for the long day.

Which is where Toasty Chicks come in.”We’re really focusing on the construction workers,” Millspaugh said. “We really anticipate getting slammed right around Memorial Day.”Snowmass Town Manager Mike Segrest said he was not aware of businesses cropping up to support construction workers.”There may be some enterprising entrepreneurs with that additional work force in town that are going to try to figure out some way to target them,” he said. “Hopefully our restaurants are really going to target them. It may help us have more of a year-round food service by having those additional people here in the village. Hopefully, there will be some positive aspects from an economic standpoint even during construction.”Toasty Chicks is currently working with The Little Dill and Tasters but hopes to add more village eateries when summer hits.

In a news release, Millspaugh said his delivery service is a “win-win” enterprise.”The restaurants will increase business without having to supply their own delivery staff or in-restaurant service, and it’s added exposure for their restaurant name,” he said. And about those skimpy shirts? “We’re not selling sex or sluttiness or anything like that,” he laughed. “We’re really focusing on the construction workers. We want to appeal to them.”And that motto? “That means from our lunch box to your tool box. They shouldn’t read anything into that.”Try telling that to hungry construction workers.Chad Abraham’s e-mail address is
