SNOWMASS VILLAGE ” Nearly 140 spaces are available in the new parking garage in Base Village at Snowmass Village ” and they’re free for a week.

But starting Dec. 20, using the Base Village parking garage will come at a cost. The heated, covered garage ” located under Base Village ” will charge $25 for a full day of parking at the base of the Elk Camp Gondola or the Village Express lift.

It will be a far less-expensive option for parents seeking to drop their children off at the Treehouse or Aspen Valley Ski Club” or skiers picking up their newly-tuned skis. The first hour will be free, and all hours after that will cost $5 per hour. Scott Stenman, Related WestPac vice-president of development, said he expected the garage to relieve the congestion seen last year at The Treehouse.

To lure people to partake of the new Base Village fare, the lot will also be free between 5 p.m. and 8 a.m. Sneaky’s Tavern, a bar and restaurant, and The Sweet Life, an ice cream and candy store/diner, opened with Snowmass Mountain. Junk and Liquid Sky, a restaurant and bar, will open Dec. 22, and Japanese tavern Buchi also will open this month.

The garage will be open 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Cars can be left as long as people want to leave them, said Related WestPac officials, but motorists will have to pay $25 for each day.

For now, the lot must be accessed using Carriage Way. After Dec. 19, drivers can access the garage either from Carriage Way or Wood Road.

The remaining 90 spaces in the new garage are reserved for residents of the Capitol Peak Lodge and their guests. The garage also will host guest services, valet parking and a temporary arrival center for Aspen/Snowmass Hospitality, which manages rentals in Snowmass Village.

The garage will be run by Aspen/Snowmass Hospitality, the rental company owned by Snowmass Base Village. Longtime local Wit Sterling will be overseeing it, according to Scott Stenman, Related West Pac president of development.

Lot C, located in Base Village next to the Elk Run gondola, still has about 150 skier spots. The lot, run by Aspen Skiing Co., charges $13 per day.
