Staff report

A New Hampshire man hiking with his son died early Wednesday evening, apparently after a health emergency.

The Pitkin County Sheriff’s Office said in a statement issued overnight that it received a call at about 6:30 p.m. of a hiker in distress in the area of Maroon Lake. The call came from the U.S. Forest Service and indicated that the patient was approximately three-quarters of a mile south of Maroon Lake on the Crater Lake Trail.

CPR was in progress. Mountain Rescue Aspen volunteers and medics from the Aspen Ambulance District reached the man at approximately 7:20 p.m..

The man, later identified as Jon Harris, 59, from New Hampshire, was declared dead at the scene at approximately 7:50 p.m.

Harris had been hiking in the area with his 15-year-old son.

Two other hikers came upon the pair and administered CPR before first responders arrived. The pair stayed with Harris’ son until family members arrived from out of town.
