BASALT – A new mayor and three new council members took office in Basalt on Tuesday night.

Jacque Whitsitt became mayor after defeating Glenn Rappaport in the April 3 election. Whitsitt was formerly a council member whose term was expiring. Whitsitt took the mayor’s gavel Tuesday night from Leroy Duroux, who couldn’t run again because of term limits.

The three new council members are Rick Stevens, Herschel Ross and Robert Leavitt. Their terms are for four years.

Whitsitt, Ross and Leavitt were sworn in with the oath of office Tuesday evening at Town Hall. Stevens couldn’t attend Tuesday’s ceremonial meeting because he had a prior commitment coaching a lacrosse game, according to people at Town Hall. He was sworn in earlier in the day.

The inductees are joining council members Anne Freedman, Karin Teague and Rappaport, who remains on the board because he is halfway through a council term. If Rappaport had won the mayoral race, the board would have appointed someone to fill his vacancy on the council.

Council members Pete McBride and Katie Schwoerer were honored, along with Duroux, for their years of service. McBride, a professional photographer, presented Town Hall with a photograph of the Colorado River from his project showing the river’s plight.
