New bike event debuts in valley

Staff report

A new bicycling event called Ride for the Child is coming to the Roaring Fork Valley on June 20.

The road-cycling event will feature three rides of varying distances, ranging from 100 miles to 100 kilometers and 50 kilometers. The big ride is dubbed The Sopris Century.

The supported bike rides will raise funds for Court Appointed Special Advocates, an organization that provides well-trained, court-appointed volunteer advocates to abused and neglected children across the country.

All three rides start in Carbondale and feature great views of Mount Sopris. The Sopris Century starts at the Roaring Fork High School parking lot, winds upvalley to incorporate Capitol Creek Road and Snowmass Creek Road to the end of the pavement, then turns around at an aid station in Woody Creek. On the return downvalley, the route climbs into Missouri Heights via El Jebel Road and takes a twisting, turning, rollercoaster-type path before returning to the valley floor and back to Carbondale. Riders will bike through 7,095 feet of elevation gain over the full course.

The 100K ride (69.4 miles) travels upvalley to Snowmass then returns downvalley with a detour into Missouri Heights. It includes nearly 5,000 feet of climbing.

The 50K ride (32 miles) leaves Carbondale, climbs Catherine Road and winds over to Spring Valley before descending into the valley and returning to Carbondale. It includes 2,465 feet of climbing.

“We’ve created this ride to showcase the quiet country roads and spectacular views of the Roaring Fork Valley, all to support a critically important organization in the community,” event organizer Melissa McPherron said. “We firmly believe this event will quickly grow to be a must-do for riders across the country.”

The ride will include several fully stocked aid stations as well as support vehicles circulating the course. A post-ride party with live music, food and a prize giveaway will take place at the Roaring Fork High School. Registration is limited to 350 participants. The currents fees for an individual are $85 for the Sopris Century, $75 for the Metric Century, and $75 for the 50K. The fees will soon increase.
