New 4-lane stretch opens on Hwy. 82

Aspen Times Staff Report

A new 1.5-mile stretch of Highway 82 at Old Snowmass is scheduled to open today, according to the Colorado Department of Transportation.

Construction barrels and signs will be removed from the Wingo Junction Bridge to just past Snowmass Creek Road in both the upvalley and downvalley lanes. Motorists may encounter brief delays in the area today as workers remove the barrels and signs.

“While the majority of the one and a half-mile project has been completed, we continue to remind motorists to slow down through this area, because we plan to place cones along the shoulder of the road to complete the landscaping and sound wall,” said Tom Metheny, project manager for the stretch.

The landscaping and sound wall should be completed in six to eight weeks, he said.

Another section of the four-lane, through the Shale Bluffs area, is expected to open in about a month, said highway officials. A wall designed to shore up the hillside in that section must first be completed.
