Never mind; Clinton’s coming

Aspen Times Staff Report

Apparently, President Bill Clinton has a tough time making up his mind when it comes to his fund raising plans.

It was reported yesterday that the president had canceled his plans to come to Aspen this summer, but word was received today that he has changed his mind again and will indeed make a fund-raising trip in July.

Clinton announced months ago that he would return to Aspen for a third-straight summer visit, though late last week he canceled. Yesterday, the Pitkin County Sheriff’s Office received word from the U.S. Secret Service to expect the commander-in-chief sometime in mid-July.

“Three days in mid-July – we just heard,” said Pitkin County Sheriff Bob Braudis yesterday afternoon.

“We were told last week that [the visit] was off, and now it’s on,” Braudis said.

Investigator Joe DiSalvo will serve as “incident commander” during the visit, a duty he fulfilled during Clinton’s last two visits.

“As of last Wednesday or Thursday it was off,” DiSalvo said. “And it could be off and on again before he gets here. That’s usually how it is.”

As incident commander for the visit, DiSalvo will coordinate the activities of dozens of local and state law enforcement personnel who will be in Aspen to assist the Secret Service in Clinton’s protection.
