Neurologist flies to Aspen patients

Aspen Times staff report
Aspen, CO Colorado

ASPEN – A medical evacuation service that usually flies patients to doctors flew a doctor to patients in Aspen on Friday.

Vail-based neurologist Gary Weiss arranged the trip through TriState Careflight earlier this week when it was uncertain how long the rock slide in Glenwood Canyon would keep Interstate 70 closed. Although two lanes of the four-lane highway re-opened Thursday afternoon, delays were lengthy, so Dr. Weiss commuted to work in Aspen on Friday via helicopter, according to Bonnie McDonald, practice director for Weiss Medical Associates.

Weiss is one of the few doctors in the Colorado mountains who specializes in neurology, so he visits other locations once per month. He has numerous patients in Pitkin County who suffer from problems such as chronic migraine headaches, seizures, multiple sclerosis, head and back injuries, McDonald said.

“With this week’s rock slide, we experienced great difficulty helping patients get the care they need – they couldn’t get to us, and we couldn’t get to them,” McDonald said. Weiss told McDonald to find a time-effective way, any way, to get him to Aspen on Friday. She contacted TriState’s coordinator, explained the issue and the company provided a helicopter at cost. McDonald credited TriState for helping Dr. Weiss reach his patients at a difficult time.

Weiss and his staff were picked up at Eagle County Airport at 6 a.m. Friday and took a 15 minute ride to Aspen. They were scheduled to meet with 35 patients by the time their day ended at 6 p.m., McDonald said. TriState will shuttle the medical staff to Eagle County.

On the Fly: Forever thankful

|

I try to remember to give thanks every day I spend outside, whether it be floating the Colorado or Roaring Fork, fishing an epic dry fly hatch on the Fryingpan, or teasing up tiny brook trout on a remote lake or stream. We’re spoiled rotten here, so it’s easy to be thankful.
