Nancy Morgan Smith

Nancy Morgan Smith, a longtime Aspen and Florida resident, died in Aurora on Dec. 25, 2005, after complications from Alzheimer’s.

Nancy was born in New York City, graduated from Chapin School and married James Hopkins Smith in 1937.

In 1950, they moved to Aspen and bought what is now known as the North Star Preserve. A music lover, she was one of the original trustees of the Music Associates of Aspen. She also managed North Star Ranch while her husband worked in a variety of government positions in Washington, D.C. An avid skier, tennis player and golfer, she loved the outdoors and gardening.

She was preceded in death by her youngest daughter, Dinah, in 1997. Nancy is survived by two children, Morgan Smith of Denver and Sandy Smith of Carbondale; three grandchildren, Jay Smith, Nelson Smith and Julia MacLellan, all of Denver; and three great-grandchildren, Audrey and Walker Smith, and Chet Morgan MacLellan.
