BASALT A neighbor called Basalt Police to the Lakeside Townhomes on Saturday morning where they discovered the body of a 68-year-old woman. The cause of death is unknown.Police would not say whether they suspected foul play, and officials will conduct an autopsy today to determine cause of death.

Neighbors said the body lay covered with a light sheet in a rocky draw leading to a small lake bordering residences.Basalt Police Sgt. Joe Chavira said there was blood visible at the scene when police arrived 9:30 a.m. Saturday, but would not comment on the location of the body nor suspected cause of death.Units from both Basalt and Aspen set up a crime scene Saturday, cordoning off an area about 50 yards on either side behind the woman’s two-story townhouse.

Investigators scrutinized the doorway leading to the women’s second-floor balcony, as well as items stacked on the porch including what looked like a rolled carpet. Officials also collected a pair of dark sunglasses from the yard below. “She was a good neighbor,” said Becky Brunson, who lived two doors down from the woman for the last two years. Brunson remembers “nothing out of the ordinary, ever” and said the woman was friendly and always waved.”She was a really sweet lady. She did her own thing,” Brunson said of her neighbor, who Brunson often saw riding her bicycle or spending long summer days on her balcony overlooking the lawn and the lake where her body was found Saturday.

“I guess she fell off her deck,” Brunson said, but police would not comment Saturday evening.Charles Agar’s e-mail address is cagar@aspentimes.com.
