Mystery of the Right

Dear Editor:As I am a progressive, the agenda of the Righteous Right and the Bush administration has me in a conundrum. How are they able to reconcile their demand for smaller and smaller government in the face of their imperial need for greater armies and weapons systems subsidized by that government? How are they able to require “personal initiative” and “self-reliance” of the poor but not require those virtues of CEOs who are utterly dependent on government supportive largesse to industries of communication, weapons and banking? How do they balance “compassionate conservatism” with a goal of an unfettered free market more laissez-faire than a dreaming Adam Smith? How does the kiss of money ennoble the richest but lead to corruption and weakness if one is poor? And why isn’t the value of the life of our soldiers or of Iraqi citizens on a par with the life of a small fetus? It’s a mystery.Mabel MacdonaldGlenwood and Aspen
