Music on the move

Aspen Times writer

The Aspen High School band and orchestra recently found itself in front of an international audience when it traveled to Sydney, Australia. Band members raised funds for their trip from the community, which came about because of individual local connections to musicians in the Sydney community.

The band left on March 23, traveling to Sydney with instrumental director Nancy Beyea and Aspen School District Assistant Superintendent Joanne Ihrig. They performed with Newtown High School and Campbelltown High School in Sydney, then returned on April 1.

The band and string programs were combined for the first time this year to achieve a full orchestra. The orchestra’s final concert of the season will be at 6:30 p.m. May 24 at the Aspen District Theatre.
