Music on the Mountain

May Eynon

Since summer 1994, Thursday nights in Snowmass Village have become a tradition of sorts for locals and visitors alike.

That was the year Janus Jazz Aspen Snowmass (JAS) and the Snowmass Village Resort Association initiated a free concert series at the base of Fanny Hill.

Presenting an opportunity for picnicking and socializing with friends, family and others, the concerts hold mass appeal. Starting at 6 p.m. and usually lasting until 8 p.m., these early evening performances have proved to be a mainstay on the Snowmass summer events calendar.

“We like to come here because it’s fun,” reasoned 5 1/2-year-old friends Emma Howie and Zoe Star, who accompanied their families to the concert one recent Thursday.

Performers of many different musical varieties such as blues, reggae, funk, jazz and Latin are lined up for the weekly events.

“We love the music, but sometimes we’re too busy talking to each other to hear it,” said a couple of friends who are regular concertgoers. “Everybody’s here.”

“These concerts rock!” proclaimed Jason Logan and Clayton Nevels. “The altitude up here is killing me, though,” added Nevels, who recently moved to the mountains from the Midwest.

This summer’s concert series will continue Thursdays at 6 p.m. through Aug. 23. Log on to http://www.jazzaspen.org for upcoming concert listings.
