Museum conference to be held in Snowmass and Aspen seeks volunteers
The Mountain-Plains Museum Association and Aspen Historical Society are seeking volunteers to assist with an upcoming museum conference. The Mountain-Plains Museum Association will hold its 2014 annual conference Sept. 28 through Oct. 2.
Volunteers will be asked to help with registration, transportation, monitoring sessions and aiding such ancillary events as the conference closing party. In exchange, volunteers can often receive a partial or full-day admission to the conference. The conference headquarters are at The Westin in Snowmass, with some events in Aspen.
The conference is designed for anyone who works, volunteers or is interested in museums. Hundreds of attendees from art, history, science, tribal and local museums as well as zoos and botanical gardens with paid and volunteer staffs are expected to attend the conference.
The Aspen Historical Society, along with cultural organizations in Snowmass, Aspen and nearby towns will help to host the conference, which is expected to attract more than 400 museum professionals. Some program highlights include board fundraising, creating engaging tours, museum evaluations, tips for curators and serving Latino audiences.
Keynote speakers include Kirk Johnson, director of the National Museum of Natural History at Smithsonian Institution, Washington, D.C.; Steve Wickes, retired associate director for the Aspen Institute; Ron Schiller, founding partner of the Aspen Leadership Group; Andrew Anway, founder of Amaze Design, Boston; and Paul Andersen, author, journalist, historian, moderator and naturalist.
