Much ado about nothing? Aspen mall sex video looks to be old

Staff reports

A video clip allegedly shot Wednesday of two people having sex in the doorway of a downtown Aspen business is probably two years old, police said Friday.

Four people approached Aspen police officers Wednesday night asking if the police had seen the video, a sergeant said Thursday. The people who reported seeing the video thought an intoxicated couple the officers were in the process of arresting might be the same couple in the video, the sergeant said.

However, a timestamp on the video indicating it was shot in January 2016 surfaced Friday, Aspen Assistant Police Chief Bill Linn said.

“We’ve heard the timestamp on the video makes it more than two years old,” Linn said. “Why it popped up the other night we don’t know.”

The officers thought the clip was recent because of the unrelated people reporting it, he said. In addition, the clip featured snow, which was falling Wednesday night, Linn said.

And while the clip is not the department’s highest priority, police have requested video surveillance footage from the business where the public sex allegedly occurred to verify whether it happened or not, Linn said.
