Movieland likely to add 2 screens

A proposal to expand Movieland from five to seven screens has received a favorable recommendation from the Basalt planning staff.

Movieland’s owner, Midvalley Development Co., has proposed adding 3,100 square feet to the west side of its building in El Jebel. It would expand toward the old Cilantro’s restaurant.

Basalt Town Planner Glenn Hartmann wrote in a memo to the town planning commission that the proposal is consistent with the overall approval. Midvalley Development Co. proposed an amendment to its approval to allow it to combine two approved additions into one.

That would allow stadium-style seating in the two new theaters, providing better views.

The addition wouldn’t add any more seating than contemplated in original approvals, according to Hartmann. Therefore, no additional parking would be required.

Hartmann noted that Midvalley Development Co. has already pledged to contribute $15,000 for construction of a sidewalk along East Valley Road. The town plans to construct that sidewalk this summer.

Movieland’s expansion request will be reviewed by the planning commission tonight, then move on to the Town Council.
