Mountain Mayhem: Bemelmans Bar x Mytheresa take Aspen

Emmy award-winning pianist/composer Earl Rose from Bemelmans in New York City performs at the opening night reception in Aspen.

For the very first time, the storied Bemelmans Bar within The Carlyle, A Rosewood Hotel, has popped up outside of its Upper East Side setting in Manhattan. Partnering with leading luxury digital platform Mytheresa, the celebrated hospitality brand has brightened the ski season in Aspen with this temporary après-ski bar at 620 E. Hyman Ave., directly across the street from the Aspen Art Museum.

Guests will discover Bemelmens’ red-jacketed bartenders serving ice-cold martinis and sidecars on silver trays, a menu of light bites, and a pianist playing on a Steinway. This is combined with an edit of extraordinary style from Mytheresa, featuring an ice bar with champagne and dazzling jewels and a playful “Press for Fashion” button to request stylish offerings delivered table-side.

For the Aspen iteration, custom murals and matching lampshades by New York artist Xavier Donnelly were inspired by the original designs in Bemelsmans Bar by Ludwig Bemelmans, the author and illustrator of the Madeline children’s books. Donnelly’s designs capture winter scenes of Aspen with repeat patterns of gondolas, skiers, snowflakes, and Mytheresa shopping bags.

An opening night soirée took place on Valentine’s Day Eve with Emmy Award-winning composer and pianist Earl Rose — beloved for over three decades at the original Bemelmans Bar in New York — holding court at the Steinway. Aspen local artists continue the tradition of live piano throughout the experience.

“This collaboration brings Mytheresa’s style to Aspen in the sophisticated setting of Bemelmans Bar, offering the ultimate winter experience for those who appreciate the perfect martini alongside a finely curated edit of fashion and exquisite jewelry,” said Heather Kaminetsky, president of Mytheresa, North America.

“Bemelmans Bar has been a defining part of New York’s cultural and social fabric for almost a century,” said Marlene Poynder, managing director of The Carlyle. “To bring its legacy to Aspen for the first time is a meaningful moment, made possible through our partnership with Mytheresa — a brand that shares our commitment to artistry and exceptional experiences.”

The whimsical pop-up runs from 3-9 p.m. daily Feb. 14 to March 2 with reservations available on Resy.com.
