Celebrating 40 years of World Cup skiing in Aspen, the entire town got into the spirit of the season as kids and kids at heart went skiing, snowboarding, sledding, watched the races, and took part in tandem sack races.
A field of 24 businesses participated in The Aspen Times’ Winternational World Cup window display contest with top honors going to Pomeroy Sports. The fastest women in the world arrived in Aspen for a weekend of Slalom and Giant Slalom racing. After weeks of preparation, the course was prime and ready however Mother Nature had other intentions in mind for both race days. Confronted by challenging conditions of accumulating snowfall, high-speed winds and poor visibility, competitors battled their way around the gates.
As audiences around the world watched the races televised live from Aspen, fans filled the bandstands and Sentient Jet’s VIP tent at the base of the course to cheer for their heroes. American favorites Olympic Gold Medalist Julia Mancuso, Lindsay Vonn, Resi Steigler, Caroline Lalive, Kaylin Richardson and Stacey Cook drew support from the nationals while the international competitors were encouraged by a foreign contingent waving their home country flags and cheering in their native tongues.
In the end, Giant Slalom winner Tessa Worley of France earned a gold medal on Saturday and Sarka Zahrobska from the Czech Republic took first place in the Slalom on Sunday.
