DURANGO, Colo. – Colorado wildlife officers have shot and killed a mountain lion that wandered onto the grounds of a downtown Durango elementary school, but no classes were in session at the time.

Park Elementary School Principal Scott Cooper says the mountain lion became trapped in an exterior courtyard on Monday. The lion leaped against a window as it struggled to escape, startling a custodian in a hallway inside.

Cooper says a secretary called 911 and police contacted the Division of Wildlife.

DOW spokesman Joe Lewandowski says the 75-pound, 2-year-old lion had probably recently gone out on its own and had followed its food supply into town.

Students are due back at the school later this month.

It was the third mountain lion to wander into Durango in two years.
