Motorists: Give yourselves a brake
Dear Editor:The average speed limit on most interstates in the United States is 65-75 mph. The speed limit on Highway 82 is 65 mph between Glenwood Springs and Blue Lake near El Jebel, with the exception of the stoplights in between, which are posted at 55 mph. Most of us have read the news, or even seen the destruction, of the accident that occurred on March 8 near the Dakota area. So quickly our lives can change, like the victims’ lives have. These people, our friends and neighbors, have a living nightmare to tell. This accident could have been you, me or anybody, who knows. We hope and pray that everyone is fine. This was an accident, they happen every day, but if we just slow down a bit, we may have fewer. When Highway 82 was completed in the lower valley six or seven years ago, I said that if there was a petition to reduce the speed limit to 55 mph, I would be the first to sign it. I wonder if that petition is out there? Maybe I should start it myself. This idea may or may not reduce the number of accidents on Highway 82, but it may give us a better chance of staying in touch with our neighbors. Please, just slow down.Jeff HeidemannBasalt
