Mother Lode purchase is absurd

I have only lived in this town for a year, but it seems to me the idea of the city buying the Mother Lode is absurd. The money is clearly need elsewhere. For example, where was the City Council a few weeks ago when 24 Hours of Aspen needed only $350,000 for a sponsor? That race is more a part of Aspen than one restaurant.

As one local put it, “our city government is to protect Aspen’s cultural character.” Aspen’s cultural character is skiing, last time I checked. Why is City Council buying restaurants when we are losing Freestyle Fridays at Highlands and the 2004 World Cup is in jeopardy? What’s next?

We’ve already lost a great place for live music and now we are losing historical races and events that are part of this town’s image. I’m not too concerned with ski magazine resort rankings, but it’s no wonder this town is getting surpassed by other resorts.

Vote no on City Referendum 2E and help keep Aspen, Aspen.
