More sunshine, please

Editor’s note: The following letter was written to Aspen Mayor Mick Ireland.

Dear Editor:

Thank you, Mick, for having the clear eyes to see through the ridiculous “infill” policy that was sold by outside “experts” to a former council. It was supposed to prevent development pressure outside town and provide “messy vitality.”

As I predicted, what it actually did was encourage taller, bigger, mostly empty buildings with ritzy penthouses on top, and of course did nothing to discourage development elsewhere. Ever notice how the liveliness disappears as soon as the sun drops below a roofline? Mick, keep the sun shining on our downtown streets!

P.S. I also agree that our code should be crafted for the long term, not change with every arc of the business cycle.

Mari Peyton
