DENVER – Snow is expected to fall over parts of western Colorado from Wednesday through Friday morning and the mountains surrounding Aspen could see 6 to 12 inches of new snow before it tapers off, according to the National Weather Service.

The Elk Mountains surrounding Aspen are under a winter weather advisory through 6 a.m. Friday, the weather service said.

In town, the weather service was predicting up to 3 inches of snow Wednesday night, 1 to 3 inches on Thursday and perhaps another inch Thursday night.

The bloggers at aspenweather.net were calling for 4 to 6 inches of new snow on local ski slopes by early Thursday morning, with the potential for a few more inches during the day Thursday.

The snow comes on the heels of a Christmas Eve storm that dropped 20 inches of snow on some parts of Grand Mesa and left 8 inches of fresh snow at Snowmass and on Aspen Mountain.

Meanwhile, the storm that’s hitting the nation’s midsection has canceled some flights into Denver from Indianapolis and Pittsburgh and is delaying some departures for Cincinnati, Philadelphia and La Guardia. Denver-based Frontier Airlines is waiving fees for travelers who change the timing of their flights to parts of Ohio, Detroit, Indianapolis and LaGuardia.
